The Svalbard Islands are "located in the Arctic Ocean, halfway between Norway and the North Pole. There you will find unspoilt Arctic nature and unique wildlife in an environment that is both rugged and fragile". This is also where the scientific basis from which Jamie Buchanan-Dunlop, Executive Director of Encounter Edu, and Dr. Ceri Lewis in Marine Biology have been in contact via streaming this morning with 3rd and 4th year ESO students

After introducing himself and greeting the students from different centres in the United Arab Emirates, Canada, the USA, the UK and Portugal, Dr Buchanan led the students in a simulated experiment on sampling ice containing microplastics, which have long been a major environmental concern around the world.

In this way, through the STEAM competences, The aim is to raise awareness of the issue of this waste in all educational corners of the world. Recently, members of the AXA Arctic Live expedition found microplastics that are reaching the polar regions carried by ocean currents and are now trying to measure their impact on this ecosystem.

The scientists answered questions sent in by the students before and during the live broadcasting We are grateful for these initiatives that allow us to get to know and appreciate such a spectacular place! Incredible experience!

Encounter Edu designs and delivers sponsored global STEAM learning programmes that transform education inside and outside the classroom.
