Trilingualism

We are committed to an innovative educational model through new methodologies that allow the development of competencies and skills that our students will need in their professional development.

International Boys' Schools Coalition

Gaztelueta is a member of the International Boys' Schools Coalition (IBSC), an international coalition of boys' schools founded in 1995. It shares pedagogical experiences and facilitates the connection between students from different countries to work on common projects. Hundreds of schools from more than 20 countries on five continents are represented, including Australia, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, China, Ecuador, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, Peru, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, the United States and Zimbabwe.

Official qualifications

Gaztelueta is an official examination centre, recognised by the British Council. Our challenge is for pupils to finish school having acquired official language qualifications. To this end, we have adapted the materials, methodologies and resources so that pupils can achieve level C1 (Advanced) in English in the 2nd year of Bachillerato, and B2 (First) in the 3rd year of ESO.

In addition, our students are also prepared to take official Basque language exams. Our aim is for them to acquire a B2 level of Basque in the 2nd year of Bachillerato and B1 in the 3rd year of ESO.

Students taking French from 1st ESO can reach level B2 at the end of the Baccalaureate.

Conversation Assistants

You learn a language when you use it. That is why we have young people from different English-speaking countries to converse with the students. In groups of two students, the native speakers - coordinated by the English Department - encourage the students' oral expression and comprehension.

In view of the good results, we are incorporating Basque conversation assistants to reinforce linguistic competence in this language.

Speaking Corner

In small groups, and through stories and games, the Infant pupils are making ears and acquiring the necessary basis for mastering English in the future. Thus, in a natural way and from an early age, without even realising it, they take their first steps in learning this important language. The pupils enjoy an innovative education and have the opportunity to reinforce the notions of English they receive during the day and apply them orally with a native speaker.

Exchange programme

The students in 6th Grade take part in an exchange programme that focuses on language immersion in English, through a month-long stay in Irish schools and families.

There is also an exchange programme with a school in Paris for pupils studying French in secondary school.

It is made easier for families who so wish to allow their children to participate in stays of varying lengths in foreign schools.

Every two years a cultural exchange is organised with Japanese students from Shonan High School. It is a great opportunity to connect different cultures in a global world.

Hizkuntza Eskola eta Kazetarien Txokoa

Situations are encouraged for pupils to use Basque as a language of communication, through small txokos and other activities.
