Last week, Dr. Jacinto Bátiz, Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona, presented the University of the Basque CountryThe visit of a family doctor, Master in palliative care, expert in ethics and medical deontology, took place in the framework of the subject of Religion.
The former head of the Palliative Care Area from San Juan de Dios Hospital in Santurcewho throughout his career has combined his medical work with teaching, accompanied the students in an exercise of reflection on death in western societies from an intellectual, emotional and medical perspective.
It helped students to approach the final process of natural death in an interaction with terminally ill patients, their families and the various professionals who care for them.
Dr. Jacinto Bátiz made use of his book Towards a culture of palliationpublished by the Pía Aguirreche Foundation of which he is a patron. He is also Chairman of the Section of Palliative Care of the Academy of Medical Sciences of BilbaoThe Bioethics Working Group of the Spanish Society for General and Family Medicine (SEMG) and member of the End-of-Life Care Observatory of the Spanish Medical Association (OMC) as well as visiting professor at the University of the Basque Country, University of Deusto, Comillas Pontifical University y Autonomous University of Madrid in postgraduate courses in Palliative Care.
Among many other distinctions, the National Prize "Reflexiones Opinión Sanitaria" was awarded for the article Caring with Caresses published in the Courier in 2009.
