Juan A. Durán de la Colina (Prom. 15) studied and obtained his doctorate in Medicine at the University of Santiago de Compostela. In that city he specialised in Ophthalmology. Subsequently, thanks to a MEC/Fulbright grant completed a subspecialty in Cornea and external diseases at the Mass Eye & Ear (Harvard Medical School) in Boston.
He returned to Bilbao in 1990 when he obtained the chair of Ophthalmology at the UPV/EHU and became head of the Ophthalmology Service at the University of the Basque Country. Cruces Hospital. In 1995 he began his private activity as a founding partner in the Clinical-Surgical Institute of Ophthalmology.
He is married and has three children; the two boys are also students at Gaztelueta. From the first moment of his return to Bilbao, he made friends with his school friends, which he continues to maintain. Two of his great hobbies began during his school years; the mountains thanks to Vicente Marín and cycling thanks to his classmates. It was during his summer holidays in Galicia that he discovered his passion for the sea through rowing and sailing.
He has very fond memories of the school: "What Gaztelueta offered me became conscious over the years. Responsibility, respect, companionship, cleanliness and many other values that I have tried to apply in my life and in my environment. I feel very proud to have been a Gaztelueta student".
