Educational innovation in primary education

STEAM Education

We are committed to STEAM education, as another means to achieve the personal development and competence of each student. The Department of Education of the Basque Government Gaztelueta has been recognised in recent years with the STEAM Euskadi labelThe Greenpower international educational project, awarding prizes for best practice among more than 100 schools. Greenpower's international educational project, which is already being developed in primary schools, is a new multidisciplinary and applied learning model where students work as a team to build an electric and ecological car using renewable energies as the basic principles of a sustainable environment. This international project involves more than 10,000 students from all over the world and they have even competed in the Goodwood and Siverstone circuits (UK).

In years 1 to 3 of Primary Education we have the subject of CREATIVE MATHEMATICS which develops students' stem, entrepreneurial and learning to learn skills through the solution of challenges, problem solving and the implementation of thinking strategies.

Cooperative work

It is very important that cooperative work is present in all the projects and that it is worked on in a cross-cutting manner throughout the primary school stage.

Project-based learning

At Gaztelueta we are committed to a project-based methodology that helps students to be the true protagonist of their own learning and which in turn favours learning by competences. We organise quarterly transdisciplinary projects that involve the proposal of recreational, sporting and academic activities related to the project. Some of the latest projects at primary level have been: the World Cup, Get to know Bizkaia or the Olympics. Others are also carried out in the different subjects, especially in Gizarte and Science. One of the most recent is the Zinkers Project, which works on curricular content on energy, the environment, sustainability and the 2030 Agenda in the three cycles of primary education. It promotes cross-cutting work with different subjects and areas of knowledge.

Arts and Humanities

At Gaztelueta we also highlight the relevance and importance of the arts and humanities, which are fundamental for good personal development and are also of great support for scientific development. Theatre, painting, music or the use of libraries and our own reading project to encourage a taste for reading are of great help. From these first years, different projects are worked on to develop the aesthetic and creative capacity of the pupils. The writer's workshop is another time to work on creative writing through the needs, desires or tasks of the pupils at this stage of primary school.

Primary projects

Extracurricular activities

They complement and enrich education, stimulate and channel creativity. We promote the arts, humanities and sport to ensure that the intellectual growth of our students is harmonious and sustainable.

Autumn Olympiad

Ireland Programme

At Gaztelueta we think that, at this age, having the opportunity to live like Irish people for four weeks is priceless. Thanks to Rockbrook International, each of them lives with an Irish family and is lucky enough to attend an Irish school as one of the students. In the schools they are always with at least one other Gaztelueta student. The language programme has been running in the second term for over 20 years and has been a complete success. The students who take part, accompanied for four weeks by a teacher from the school, not only improve their English due to total immersion, but also gain in maturity, autonomy and self-esteem by adapting to new circumstances such as those they face in Dublin.

Sports party

Emotions workshop

We educate from emotions by talking about different real or hypothetical situations with which students are familiar at home or in the classroom.

School garden

Summer courses

During the last weeks of June and during the month of July, we offer courses in which we aim to make the daily use of English compatible with a series of sporting activities (football, paddle tennis and swimming); combined with other innovative activities such as creativity workshops, science workshops, emotional workshops, musical expression, cultivation of the school garden and the use of new technologies in robotics.
