Alfonso Fernández Urbano, 2nd year Baccalaureate student and volunteer in several social responsibility initiatives, tells us about the initiative Genuine League with the participation of the Athletic Club thanks to the Athletic Fundazioa. If you want to know more about this project, discover the testimony of Meritxell Mardaras, sister of one of the players and infant school teacher at Gaztelueta, on social networks.
"On 23 January, the students of 1st ESO had a talk about inclusion of people with disabilities in football and society by the Athletic Fundazioa. The players of the Genuine team (formed by people with intellectual disabilities) Igor and Josean, together with their coaches Eli and Igor, shared their experiences as players of the club of their hearts of which they form part as one more.
The session, in which both speakers and spectators interacted constantly, was a success. Everyone ended up very satisfied and with a greater personal enrichment, closing the meeting singing. The talk tried to make the students aware of the importance, both for people with and without disabilities, of feeling that they are part of something in society, bringing them closer to the idea that we are all equal and deserve and are worth the same, despite our differences.
This meeting was the first of a series of activities that will be carried out in the school this year with the aim of inclusion of people with disabilities. Secondary 2 and Primary 6 pupils will also receive similar sessions in February with the help of the Down Syndrome Foundation of the Basque Country and the Hockey + team of the Hockey Stick Getxo club (made up of people with intellectual disabilities). In addition, in the next few days we will be holding a friendly match in Gaztelueta between ESO and Bachillerato students and members of the Down Syndrome Foundation of the Basque Country".
Congratulations Alfonso and Meritxell for your dedication to this project.
